Micro Flexo Crab

Probably one of the best crab patterns ever invented. No matter the situation, this just seems to be the code cracker. We've re-done our Flexo's to be equipped with properly weighted tungsten dumbbells with this variant now dressed on a Gamakatsu SL11.

This is the size 6 micro flexo crab that has been a trigger-fooling pattern since its inception. Permit are also big fans of these crabs. 

Triggers have extremely strong chompers, so be prepared to go through a pile of these flies if you are targeting triggers. It is not uncommon to see the trigger tipping onto your fly, feeling nothing when you try to strip set the fly into the trigger's mouth, and the fly is completely mangled when you check on it. Triggers suck the fly in and crunch on it before you even know what is happening. 

This fly has a slightly thinner hook diameter than the trigger flexo - but this does allow you to sink the point into the hard mouth more easily. Also, the "micro" version of this fly is less intimidating to a fish that has had everything and the kitchen sink tossed at it. 

As for color, variety in your fly selection is important. The white crab gives the angler the option to customize it by using various earth tone markers. I have included 3 photos of a white crab that was customized with copic markers to make it mottled camo. If you have the white crab you can color it or keep it white to fish on the blindingly white sand flats.

We do have a special "trigger" flexo crab, but that doesn't mean that you should look past a micro flexo crab. Just because a flexo pattern is touted as a "trigger" fly does not mean that it is the only flexo pattern that will work. I have had clients hook hundreds of triggers on this micro flexo fly as well as the larger flexo crab. 

Over our ten years of hosting trips to CXI - we spend 4-5 weeks there each year with 16 people each week, we have had the opportunity to test out all of the types of flexo crabs on the market. The Fulling Mill flexo crabs of all sizes and colors have been the #1 pattern for fooling picky triggers. We suggest that you take a variety of colors and sizes. Big heavy crabs do not do well on calm days or on days when the tide is low and the water is skinny. Best to have standard, micro, and trigger flexos.
