This little wisp of a Pale Morning Dun has CDC wings (Cul du Cunard, AKA butt of the duck) which are a bit darker than they appear in this photo. The CDC feathers are permeated in the natural oils that repel water. If you have ever watched a duck preening, you will see that they rub their bills on the oil glands near their rear ends and spread those oils all over their feathers to make them waterproof.
Thus, the little puffs of CDC feathers as wings will keep this fly floating. The silhouette of the PMD mayfly will fool even the pickiest of trout. The handy little smidge of orange foam will not only help with floatation, it will allow you to pick your imitation out in a sea of naturals.
