Balanced leeches are a relatively new weapon in the world of fly fishing. This bead head fly ties onto the end of your leader NOT in front of the bead - there is no hook eye there. Instead, you will thread your leader through the hook eye which protrudes upward through the hackle just behind the bead head. The secret under all those feathers is that the bead head is first threaded onto a dress pin, and that dress pin is lashed to a 90-degree angle jig hook, so the bead hangs out in front of the leader attachment point and that makes the leech swim in a balanced way.
This balanced leech action works in both lakes and on rivers. The balanced leech works quite well when jigged on a Euro nymphing leader.Â
