Large, Med-Large, Med-Small Feathers - LIMIT ONE PER CUSTOMER.
Many traditional Spey flies are tied with materials that are no longer legal to own and use for fly tying. Great Blue Heron is one material that is completely off-limits to tiers in the US, so, we use the Blue Eared Pheasant as a good substitution. Available mainly through backyard bird breeders, this bird has become very scarce in recent years.
We were able to purchase one full BEP skin this winter and have been in the process of plucking, washing, sorting, and preparing the feathers for resale to our fly tying customers. Now they are packaged and ready to go out the door to you for your next fly tying project.
Since our supply is so limited, and we want many (not just a few) of our customers to have the opportunity to purchase these feathers, we will be limiting the purchase of these feathers to one large, one medium-large, one medium-small package per customer. We have many packages of small feathers, so, customers will not be limited on the number of small size BEP feather packages.
Large feathers are pretty darn long, and will make for a good hackle on very large hook sizes like 1, 1.5, 2 or even larger. The med-large and medium-small are going to be the best sizes for anglers tying steelhead fly patterns like the Lady Caroline from size 3 through 7. The small feathers will do a great job as a throat or hackle on small steelhead patterns (size 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) and many of these feathers have huge creative potential for trout flies.
Most of the packages contain 6 feathers, but some will have a few extras tossed in. We sometimes have feathers that are not top-quality, but which are still usable. Those are the “extra” feathers included in some of the packages. In the medium-small size we have some packages of 12.
When feathers were greasy or bent, we washed them under hot water with Dawn dish soap. If you need to make a feather look more fluffy or beautiful, it is okay to wash them with hot water and Dawn and to blow dry them with hot air from a hair dryer.
